How to play the card game Newmarket

At Playiro, we’ve broken down the rules of Newmarket, explained how to play step by step, and shared some useful tips to help you get the most out of your next game session.

Preparations

To play Newmarket, you’ll need:

  • A standard 52-card deck
  • 3 to 8 players
  • Chips, coins, candies, or tokens for betting (optional but adds excitement)
  • A Newmarket layout (4 designated pools or areas labeled: Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of separate suits)

Setup:

  1. Place four cards face-up on the table: Ace of Spades, King of Hearts, Queen of Clubs, and Jack of Diamonds (or similar), these represent the betting pools.
  2. Each player receives an equal number of chips.
  3. Players place one chip on each layout card at the start of the round.
  4. Deal all 52 cards as evenly as possible among the players. Some players may get one extra card.

Gameplay for Newmarket – all steps

Newmarket is played with sequential runs in the same suit, starting from the lowest available card.

Playing the hand:

  • The starting player lays down the lowest card of any suit they hold.
  • The next player must play the next higher card in that suit, if they have it.
  • Play continues upward (e.g., 4♠ → 5♠ → 6♠...) until no one can follow.
  • The last player to play starts a new suit with the lowest card they hold.
  • The round continues until one player gets rid of all their cards, they win the round!

Special cards (the layout cards):

If you play one of the 4 layout cards during a run:

  • You win the pile of chips or coins placed on that card before the round began.

Who and how do you win in Newmarket?

Newmarket is played in rounds, and there are two main ways to win:

Short Game:

  • The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round.
  • Typically, players agree on a certain number of rounds to win or a specific chip total to reach.
  • The rules are flexible here, so choose what suits your group!

Long Game:

  • The player with the most chips at the end of all rounds (after a set number you decide beforehand) is the overall winner.

Playiro’s best tips and strategies for Newmarket

While Newmarket mostly comes down to luck, there are a few smart tricks you can use to improve your odds:

Watch the layout cards

If someone holds a layout card (e.g., Queen of Hearts), be mindful of how you play lower cards in that suit it could create a payout.

Start suits you can finish

If you get the chance to start, pick a suit where you hold several cards. This lets you play multiple cards in sequence and gain an early lead.

Track what’s been played

Keep your head in the game! Remembering which cards have already been played helps you make better decisions when choosing which suit to start.

Hold onto high cards

Kings and Aces are powerful, especially when you’re holding strong suits. Use them wisely to block other players' runs and take control of the game.

Newmarket FAQ

What are “layout cards” in Newmarket?

The layout cards are A, K, Q, and J of selected suits. By playing one of these during a round, you win the chips on that card’s pile.

How many players can play Newmarket?

Newmarket is best with 4–5 players, but it works for 3–8 players. If you’re 6 or more, consider reducing the number of cards per player for smoother gameplay.

Is Newmarket mostly luck or skill?

Newmarket is primarily luck-based, but strategy matters too. Tracking cards and playing your high cards strategically can significantly improve your odds.

Can Newmarket be played without betting?

Absolutely! You can replace chips with points, which is especially useful when playing with kids or if you prefer a more casual game.

What happens if no one can follow suit in Newmarket?

When no player can continue (a run is broken), the last player who successfully played a card starts the next run by laying down their lowest card.

How do you win in Newmarket?

You win in Newmarket by being the first to play all your cards and by collecting the stakes from the pools during play.
