Skyjo Rules
Skyjo is one of the most popular card games for families and casual game nights. The rules are simple enough to learn in just a few minutes, but every turn involves making smart decisions about when to reveal cards, swap values, or take risks.
The objective is straightforward: finish the game with the lowest total score after several rounds. To do that, you'll need a combination of memory, timing, and a little bit of luck.

What is Skyjo?
Skyjo is a strategic card game for 2–8 players where everyone tries to keep their score as low as possible. Unlike many traditional card games, players begin each round with most of their cards hidden, meaning you must remember where your low and high cards are while adapting to new information throughout the game.
A single round can change dramatically in just a few turns, especially when players remove entire columns or race to reveal all of their cards.
| Game Information | Details |
|---|---|
| Players | 2–8 |
| Playing Time | 20–40 minutes |
| Recommended Age | 8+ |
| Game Type | Card Game |
| Goal | Finish with the fewest points |
| Skill Level | Easy to learn, medium strategy |
Did you know? Although Skyjo relies partly on luck, experienced players consistently outperform beginners by remembering hidden cards and knowing when to end a round.
Skyjo setup
Setting up Skyjo only takes a minute.
Each player receives 12 cards, all dealt face down.
Arrange them into a 4 × 3 grid with four columns and three rows. Without looking at any hidden cards, every player flips any two cards face up.
Next:
| Setup Step | Action |
|---|---|
| Shuffle | Shuffle all cards thoroughly |
| Deal | Give each player 12 face-down cards |
| Arrange | Create four columns with three cards each |
| Reveal | Turn over any two cards |
| Draw pile | Place remaining cards face down |
| Discard pile | Turn over the top card beside the draw pile |
The player whose two revealed cards have the highest combined value starts the first round.
For example:
- Player A reveals 12 and -2 (total 10)
- Player B reveals 4 and 2 (total 6)
Player A begins because their total is higher.
After the first round, the player who finished the previous round starts the next one.
How to play Skyjo
Every turn follows the same basic sequence, but each decision can influence the entire round.
Step 1: Draw a card
Start your turn by choosing one of two cards:
- The top card of the discard pile (face up)
- The top card of the draw pile (face down)
Your choice determines your available options for the rest of the turn.
Step 2: If you take the discard pile card
If you choose the visible discard card, you must exchange it with one of your own cards.
You may replace:
- a face-up card
- a face-down card
If replacing a hidden card, you do not look at it first.
The replaced card is then placed face up on the discard pile.
Step 3: If you draw from the deck
When drawing a hidden card, you first look at it privately.
You now have two choices.
Keep the card
Exchange it with any one of your 12 cards.
The replaced card becomes the new top card of the discard pile.
Reject the card
If you don't want it, place it directly onto the discard pile.
Instead of swapping cards, you must reveal one face-down card from your own layout.
Your turn immediately ends.
Removing columns
One of Skyjo's most satisfying mechanics is removing entire columns.
If all three cards in the same vertical column become identical, that entire column is discarded.
This immediately removes those points from your board.
For example:
| Column | Result |
|---|---|
| 4 / 4 / 4 | Entire column discarded |
| -1 / -1 / -1 | Entire column discarded |
| 8 / 8 / 8 | Entire column discarded |
This rule also applies during the final scoring if revealing the remaining hidden cards creates a matching column.
Removing columns is one of the best ways to reduce your total score.
Ending a round
A round ends as soon as one player has revealed all 12 of their cards.
However, the round doesn't stop immediately.
Every other player receives one final turn before scoring begins.
After that:
- All remaining hidden cards are revealed.
- Matching columns are removed if applicable.
- Every remaining card is added together.
The resulting total becomes that player's score for the round.
Special scoring rule
Finishing first does not automatically give you an advantage.
The player who ends the round must also have the lowest score.
If another player finishes with the same or fewer positive points, the player who ended the round has their score doubled.
Example
| Player | Round Score | Final Score |
|---|---|---|
| Player A (finished first) | 10 | 20 |
| Player B | 24 | 24 |
| Player C | 10 | 10 |
Because Player C matched Player A's score, Player A's 10 points are doubled to 20.
Important: This penalty only applies to positive scores. Zero or negative scores are never doubled.
How do you win Skyjo?
Skyjo is played across multiple rounds.
After every round, each player's score is added to their running total.
Once any player reaches 100 points or more, the game immediately ends after that round.
The winner is the player with the lowest overall score.
Skyjo strategy tips
Skyjo may be easy to learn, but consistently finishing with the lowest score takes smart decision-making. Keeping track of hidden cards, knowing when to end a round, and watching your opponents can all make a significant difference over the course of a game.
Don't rush to finish the round. Revealing all of your cards too early can be risky. If another player finishes with the same or a lower positive score, your score for that round will be doubled. Sometimes it's worth taking an extra turn to improve your position.
Remember where important cards are. As hidden cards become revealed, try to remember the values you've already seen. A good memory helps you make better swaps later in the round and avoid unnecessary risks.
Aim to remove entire columns. Three matching cards in the same vertical column are discarded immediately. Even if the cards aren't very low, completing a set can dramatically reduce your total score.
Pay attention to your opponents. Watch which cards other players pick up and which ones they discard. Their choices often reveal what they're trying to build and can help you make better decisions on your own turns.
