The Catan card and board game is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a fully refreshed 6th Edition, launching across global markets throughout 2025. Publisher Catan GmbH and Kosmos describe the update as the “most comprehensive rules and design overhaul since the game’s debut in 1995.”
What’s New
The new edition introduces a streamlined rulebook with improved clarity for first-time players, refined components, and a modular board system that allows for more flexible setups. The visual design has also been modernized, featuring brighter color palettes and clearer iconography across resource cards and tiles.
According to the publisher, the goal was to make Catan “more accessible and visually coherent” while preserving the classic gameplay that made it a staple of modern board gaming. Early reviewers note that setup time is faster and that the new rulebook includes expanded examples and reference guides, making the game easier to learn and teach.
Release Details
The 6th Edition base game began rolling out in March 2025 in Germany, with an international release following in April. Updated versions of the popular Seafarers and Cities & Knights expansions are also being relaunched before the end of the year, featuring compatible rule adjustments and refreshed art.
