How Playiro Evaluates Online Casinos
Fair games are a core part of our evaluation criteria: clearly stated rules, accessible return-to-player (RTP) information and evidence of independent testing of random number generators (RNGs). RTP describes a theoretical long-term average, while RNG testing assesses the randomness of game outcomes. Neither guarantees a particular result in an individual session.
Alongside game fairness, our criteria cover:
- Licensing and transparency: Clear information about the operator, its licence and whether that licence applies to the market being covered.
- Withdrawals and payment terms: Available payment methods, withdrawal limits, fees, identity verification requirements and published processing times.
- Bonus conditions: Wagering requirements, maximum bets, expiry dates, game restrictions and withdrawal caps, rather than the advertised bonus amount alone.
- Games and software: Game variety, identifiable software providers and access to rules, paytables and available return-to-player information.
- Usability and customer support: Clear navigation, mobile functionality, accessible terms and support options that suit the intended audience.
- Responsible gambling: Accessible tools for setting limits, taking breaks and self-excluding, alongside clear information about gambling risks.
The importance of each factor can vary by country. Our country-specific guides provide the relevant context, while this international guide explains the principles behind those comparisons. A high rating is never a guarantee of winnings or a risk-free gambling experience.
How We Test and Evaluate Online Casino Games
Our assessment framework starts with three questions: is there verifiable evidence of independent game testing, are the rules clearly explained, and what return-to-player percentage applies to the available game version? These checks help distinguish game fairness from the financial terms of playing.
Practical gameplay checks form a separate part of the assessment. They cover how games load, display information and respond to player actions. They cannot establish whether a random number generator is statistically sound or whether a game achieves its theoretical RTP.
Independent Testing and RNG Certification
For games driven by a random number generator, the assessment begins with evidence of independent testing. Organisations such as eCOGRA test RNG systems to assess whether their output meets requirements for randomness and unpredictability. This technical work goes beyond what a reviewer can establish by playing a game.
Our criteria cover the testing organisation, certificate reference, date and scope of the assessment. A certificate may apply to a particular RNG, game version or platform component. Its relevance matters as much as the name of the laboratory.
A certification logo alone is insufficient to establish that every game on a casino website has been independently assessed. Where supporting documentation cannot be verified, the appropriate finding is “unverified”, rather than an assumption that the game is either fair or manipulated.
Checking RTP and Lower-Return Versions
RTP describes the theoretical proportion of total stakes returned as prizes over the long term. It does not describe the percentage of a deposit that an individual player will receive back.
The starting point for an RTP review is the information displayed inside the game. The title, provider, available version and selected game mode all matter. A figure on a general promotional page should not automatically be treated as the setting used by every casino.
The examples below show why this distinction matters.
| Game | Provider | Higher published RTP | Lower published RTP examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | 95.51%; 94.50% |
| Sugar Rush | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | 94.50% |
| Book of Dead | Play’n GO | 96.21% | 94.25% |
| Reactoonz | Play’n GO | 96.51% | 94.51% |
Sources: Gates of Olympus figures are published by Pragmatic Play and distribution platform GR8 Tech. Sugar Rush figures appear on Pragmatic Play’s website and in game rules published by YesPlay. Book of Dead figures are published by LeoVegas and Paddy Power; Reactoonz figures by Betsson and Paddy Power.
These are published examples, not an exhaustive list of configurations or measurements from Playiro gameplay sessions. Availability can vary by operator and market. Check the information within the specific game before playing; bonus purchases or other optional modes may have separate RTP figures.
A lower RTP does not, by itself, demonstrate manipulation. It does mean a higher theoretical house edge. For example, reducing RTP from 96.50% to 94.50% increases the house edge from 3.50% to 5.50%. Across €1,000 in total stakes, that corresponds to a theoretical average loss of €35 versus €55. Actual session results can differ substantially.
Reviewing Game Rules and Payout Tables
A game’s name does not explain all its rules. Our assessment criteria therefore include the information available before placing a bet: winning combinations, payouts, stake limits, special features and maximum-win restrictions.
For blackjack, relevant details include the payout for a natural blackjack, the dealer’s soft-17 rule and the conditions for splitting or doubling. For roulette, the wheel variant and any special payout rules matter. For slots, the review covers paylines or winning clusters, wild and scatter symbols, bonus triggers and payout caps.
The aim is to establish which version is available and whether its rules are understandable. Attractive graphics or a familiar provider name cannot replace clear game information.
Testing Gameplay on Desktop and Mobile
Practical testing focuses on observable functionality. Relevant checks include loading, readable paytables, responsive controls, clearly displayed stakes and access to round history where available.
Mobile checks also cover whether menus remain usable on a smaller screen and whether changing orientation hides important information. Any findings should identify the device, browser and play mode used. A successful demo session does not establish that account balances, real-money transactions or interrupted rounds work correctly.
Evaluating Live Casino Games
Live casino requires a separate review of the table rules and player interface. The criteria include video clarity, betting deadlines, visible bet confirmation, result displays and the handling of connection interruptions.
A clear video stream helps assess usability, but it does not independently establish the integrity of the dealing process or the entire system behind the game. Conclusions should remain limited to the evidence available.
Recording Findings and Test Limitations
A useful review record identifies the game, provider, casino, review date, published RTP, sources and practical checks completed. It also distinguishes confirmed information from unresolved questions.
Winning or losing during a short session is not evidence that a game is fair or unfair. Meaningful RTP monitoring requires sufficient data and consideration of the game’s volatility; specialist technical testing can also involve source-code review, mathematical analysis and simulations.
Playiro’s editorial assessment should make these boundaries clear: what the documentation supports, what practical checks demonstrate and what remains unverified.
Casino Games and Their Rules
Online casinos bring together games with very different rules, betting options and payout structures. Some involve decisions during each round, while others are determined entirely by chance once a bet is placed. Understanding these differences starts with the rules of the individual game.
Slots
Slots award prizes when symbols form winning combinations according to the game’s paytable. Traditional formats use paylines, while others pay for matching symbols anywhere on the reels or in connected clusters. Wilds, scatters, multipliers and bonus rounds add further rules that vary between titles.
Before playing, check how winning combinations are formed, what triggers bonus features and whether a maximum-win limit applies. The displayed RTP and volatility provide additional context, but neither predicts the outcome of your next spin.
Blackjack
In blackjack, the objective is to beat the dealer’s hand without exceeding 21. Number cards count at face value, picture cards count as ten, and aces count as one or eleven. Depending on your cards and the table rules, you can hit, stand, double down or split.
Small rule differences matter. A natural blackjack may pay 3:2 or 6:5, and the dealer may have to hit or stand on soft 17.
Roulette
Roulette involves betting on where a ball will land on a numbered wheel. Bets can cover a single number, smaller groups of numbers or broader categories such as red or black. Each bet has its own payout.
The wheel variant is an important distinction: standard European roulette has one zero, while American roulette adds a double zero. Some French tables also apply special rules to even-money bets when zero wins.
Baccarat
In the common casino version of baccarat, you bet on the Player hand, the Banker hand or a tie. The winning hand is the one closest to nine. Aces count as one, tens and picture cards count as zero, and only the final digit of a hand’s total is used.
Cards are drawn according to fixed rules, so you do not choose whether either hand takes another card. Check the payout terms, particularly Banker commission and the rules of no-commission variants.
Poker and Casino Poker
Poker includes both games played against other players and casino formats played against the house. In traditional Texas Hold’em, players combine two private cards with five community cards to form their best five-card hand. Betting decisions determine whether a hand reaches a showdown or ends when the other players fold.
Casino poker variants have their own dealing procedures, qualification rules and payout tables, so they should not be treated as interchangeable with player-versus-player poker.
Payments and Withdrawals: Fair Access to Your Funds
Fairness at an online casino extends beyond the games. Players should be able to understand how deposits and withdrawals work before transferring money. Clear fees, visible withdrawal limits and consistent verification requirements are central to that assessment.
Clear Processing Times and Fees
A fair payment policy distinguishes between the time a casino takes to approve a withdrawal and the time a payment provider takes to deliver it. An “instant withdrawal” claim needs context if requests first pass through a pending period or manual review.
Our evaluation criteria cover published processing times, transaction fees, currency conversion charges and any differences between payment methods. Restrictions should be easy to find before depositing, including whether a method supports withdrawals as well as deposits.
Withdrawal Limits and Bonus Restrictions
Minimum withdrawal amounts, daily or monthly limits and instalment policies can affect access to winnings. These conditions deserve attention alongside deposit limits: accepting a large deposit does not necessarily mean the same amount can be withdrawn in one transaction.
Bonus-related restrictions should also be clearly separated from the rules for ordinary cash balances. Wagering requirements, maximum cashouts and excluded payment methods need to be disclosed before a player accepts an offer. Ambiguous terms make it harder to understand which funds are available to withdraw.
Transparent Identity Verification
Identity checks are not, by themselves, a sign of unfair treatment. The fairness question is how clearly the casino explains the process and handles requests.
Relevant criteria include accessible information about required documents, a secure submission process and clear explanations when additional evidence is needed. Repeated requests for documents already accepted, unexplained delays or contradictory instructions warrant closer scrutiny.
How Withdrawal Claims Should Be Assessed
Published withdrawal times and independently observed results are different types of evidence. A documented payment test should record the method, verification status, request time, approval time, amount received and any deductions.
One successful withdrawal cannot establish that every payment will be handled equally well. A useful assessment considers the written policy alongside documented experiences, with particular attention to whether the casino follows its stated terms and explains exceptions clearly.
Our Recorded Withdrawal Times
The table below shows withdrawal times recorded during our tests, measured from submitting the request until the funds arrived. Results apply to the circumstances tested; verification, casino processing and payment-provider delays may affect other withdrawals.
| Withdrawal method | Withdrawal time | Number of tests |
|---|---|---|
| Cryptocurrency | 15 minutes–2 hours | 12 |
| Instant banking | 15 minutes–4 hours | 8 |
| E-wallets | 2–24 hours | 10 |
| Debit cards | 1–3 business days | 19 |
| Standard bank transfer | 2–5 business days | 25 |
Casino Bonuses and Fair Terms
A casino bonus should be judged by its conditions as well as its advertised amount. A larger offer can require substantially more wagering, restrict more games or place tighter limits on withdrawals. Fairness starts with making these conditions clear before a player accepts the promotion.
Deposit bonuses, free spins and cashback also work differently. A deposit bonus adds promotional funds to an account, while free spins have a specified stake value and eligible games. Cashback may be withdrawable cash or bonus credit with further conditions. The name of an offer does not explain its full value.
What We Look for in Bonus Conditions
Our evaluation criteria focus on the terms that determine how a bonus can be used and what can eventually be withdrawn:
- Wagering requirements: The multiplier and whether it applies to the bonus alone or to the deposit and bonus combined.
- Game contribution: How much each eligible wager counts towards completing the requirement.
- Maximum bet: Any stake limit that applies while the bonus is active.
- Expiry dates: How long players have to claim the offer and complete its conditions.
- Withdrawal restrictions: Maximum cashouts and whether the original bonus is removed before withdrawal.
- Eligibility and exclusions: Restrictions involving countries, payment methods, games or account types.
These conditions should be accessible and consistent across the promotion, full terms and account interface. A headline such as “100% bonus” provides little useful information without them.
Theoretical Payout: How Bonuses and Wagering Affect the Calculation
A simplified calculation can illustrate how wagering requirements affect the balance remaining from a bonus. It combines the starting balance, required turnover and the game’s theoretical house edge.
Required turnover = wagering multiplier × qualifying amount
Theoretical wagering cost = required turnover × (1 − RTP)
Illustrative remaining balance = deposit + bonus − theoretical wagering cost
The examples below assume a €100 deposit, games with 96% RTP, 100% wagering contribution, and no fees, cashout caps or removal of bonus funds. They also assume the full required turnover is completed. These are hypothetical comparisons, not specific offers or test results.
| Bonus received | Wagering requirement | Required turnover | Theoretical wagering cost | Illustrative remaining balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| €50 | 10× bonus | €500 | €20 | €130 |
| €100 | 10× bonus | €1,000 | €40 | €160 |
| €100 | 20× bonus | €2,000 | €80 | €120 |
| €100 | 30× bonus | €3,000 | €120 | €80 |
| €100 | 20× deposit + bonus | €4,000 | €160 | €40 |
The final column includes the original deposit: €160 remaining would represent €60 above the €100 deposited, subject to the assumptions above.
The comparison also shows why the wagering base matters. With the same €100 bonus, a 20× requirement produces €2,000 in turnover when applied only to the bonus, but €4,000 when applied to the deposit and bonus together.
These figures are not predicted cashouts. RTP is a long-term theoretical average, and actual results can vary widely. A player may lose the available balance before completing the requirement. This simple model does not account for that risk, volatility or the probability of reaching a withdrawable balance.
Game Contribution Can Increase the Required Play
The wagering multiplier does not tell the whole story when games contribute at different rates. If €1,000 of qualifying turnover is required, a game contributing 100% needs €1,000 in actual stakes. At a 20% contribution rate, reaching the same target requires €5,000 in stakes. Games contributing 0% make no progress towards it.
This is why bonus terms need to be assessed together. A lower house edge on one game may be offset by a much lower contribution rate, while a short deadline can create pressure to play more. A bonus should remain optional, with clear information about cancellation and its effect on the player’s cash and promotional balances.
Online Casinos by Country
Online casino rules differ between jurisdictions. Local licensing requirements affect which operators can offer games and what protections apply to players. Our country guides explain these differences alongside payment options, bonus terms and withdrawal conditions.
United Kingdom
The Gambling Commission regulates online casinos serving players in Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. Operators need its authorisation to provide gambling services to these players; a licence from another jurisdiction does not replace that requirement.
Our UK online casinos explores licensing, player protections and the terms to consider when comparing operators.
Australia
Australia prohibits providers from offering online casino games, including pokies, blackjack and roulette, to people in the country. The Australian Communications and Media Authority, ACMA, enforces these restrictions and blocks websites providing prohibited services. An overseas licence does not make an operator authorised to serve Australian players.
Our online casinos in Australia guide explains the regulatory position and the risks associated with offshore services.
New Zealand
New Zealand is introducing a domestic online casino licensing system under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026. The Department of Internal Affairs expects to begin issuing licences from early 2027, with transitional rules determining which existing providers can continue operating while applications are assessed.
Our New Zealand online casinos guide covers this transition, operator status and the conditions relevant to local players.
Ireland
Ireland is moving to a new regulatory framework overseen by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, GRAI. Licensing is being introduced in stages: remote betting licences commenced in 2026, while gaming and other licence categories are scheduled for later phases. A betting licence should therefore not be treated as proof of authorisation for online casino games.
Our online casinos in Ireland explains the developing framework alongside payment methods, bonus conditions and player protections.
How to Know If an Online Casino Is Safe
No single badge, licence or positive review proves that an online casino is safe. A useful assessment combines verifiable licensing information, evidence of game testing, clear payment terms and accessible player protections.
Before creating an account or depositing, check the following:
- Verify the licence independently. Search the relevant regulator’s official register and check that the company and website address match. Confirm that the licence is active and covers the services offered in your jurisdiction. A licence logo in the footer is only a starting point.
- Identify the operator. The casino should clearly state its legal company name, contact details and complaints procedure. Conflicting company names or missing ownership information make accountability harder to establish.
- Look for evidence of game testing. Check whether claims about independent testing can be verified and what the certification covers. Recognised laboratories assess specific software and systems; their logos should not be treated as blanket guarantees.
- Read the withdrawal conditions. Processing times, fees, limits and verification requirements should be available before depositing. Pay particular attention to terms that could restrict access to your balance.
- Check account security and privacy. Look for HTTPS, clear information about personal-data handling and two-factor authentication where available. HTTPS encrypts the connection, but does not establish that the business itself is trustworthy.
- Check player-protection tools. Deposit limits, breaks and self-exclusion should be clearly explained and accessible. These tools matter alongside the casino’s approach to complaints and account closure.
Warning signs include unverifiable licensing claims, guaranteed-win promises, unexplained withdrawal delays and demands for an additional deposit to release existing funds. Repeated, documented complaints deserve more attention than an isolated rating.
Even a properly regulated casino involves financial risk. Fair games can still produce substantial losses, and a high RTP does not make gambling a reliable way to earn money.
