Dice Throne changes its rules for January 2027

6th October 2026, 11:33 CEST

Dice Throne has announced a rules update taking effect on 1 January 2027, changing when players can interrupt a turn and what happens when a deck runs out. The update also brings Buh, Bye! back to organised play, giving tournament players a clear date to prepare for the revised rules.

Buh, Bye! returns to organised play

In its 5 October announcement, Dice Throne confirms that Buh, Bye! will become mandatory in Hero decks for the next organised-play Age, beginning in January 2027. The Instant Action card has been banned since January 2025.

The publisher says inconsistent timing rules and difficult edge cases prompted that ban. Its revisions aim to make interruptions easier to resolve consistently, without changing the game’s basic pitch or its Golden Rules. Successfully activated Ultimate Abilities remain protected from opponents’ interference.

For players, the key distinction is between the announcement and implementation: these are changes to prepare for in January, not an instruction to switch tournament rules immediately.

Who gets to act, and when?

The official detailed rules PDF gives the player whose turn it is the first opportunity to act, including when modifying dice.

An opponent’s responses are restricted to defined windows around an announced Offensive Ability, the Defensive Ability roll, and incoming damage. At those windows, the opponent resolves one applicable action before priority returns to the active player. Existing phase restrictions still apply.

Other dice rolls have a narrower response window: while they are being resolved, players may only take actions directly affecting those dice. An unrelated card cannot be slipped into that moment simply because it is an Instant Action.

Empty decks stay empty—with exceptions

When a deck runs out, players will no longer shuffle the discard pile into a replacement deck. However, the detailed document explicitly exempts Dice Throne Adventures and Marvel Dice Throne Missions from this change at present.

That distinction matters for groups who use the same Heroes in competitive and cooperative sessions. The announcement also directs players to its advanced rules resource for updated rulings and Hero errata.

A separate update from September’s news

Our earlier report on Dice Throne’s accessory packs and Mythic changes covered product contents, a planned $19.99 accessory-pack price and the future of bonus cards. Existing Mythics were confirmed to retain their function.

This announcement addresses how play is resolved at the table. For tournament preparation, the full rules document is the useful reference to keep alongside your Hero materials: it supplies worked examples for the timing changes that a short news summary cannot cover in full.
