War of the Ring: Sieges of Middle-earth targets December release as preorders open
Ares Games has opened preorders for Sieges of Middle-earth and announced a December 2026 retail target. The expansion gives War of the Ring Second Edition players new ways to attack and defend strongholds, with siege engines for the Shadow and Heroic Feats for the Free Peoples.

What the new announcement confirms
The publisher’s September 21 update sets out the release window and directs players to its preorder shop. This is the fourth expansion for the Second Edition board game, with battles such as Helm’s Deep and Minas Tirith providing its focus.
The news is useful for existing owners deciding whether to expand their game: this box develops the siege side of play and requires the Second Edition base game. It is not a standalone purchase for someone starting from scratch.
New options for both sides
The Shadow gains two kinds of siege engine: towers and catapults. Ares describes towers as helping sustain an assault, while catapults weaken the fortifications and defenders. The Free Peoples gain opportunities to attempt Heroic Feats during sieges, giving the defending side new ways to resist.
A second addition connects the two sides through a shared resource cycle. Fellowship tokens start with the Free Peoples; after use, they become Palantír tokens that the Shadow can exploit. ICv2’s report independently confirms that mechanism and the December window.
That exchange adds a trade-off to watch: a benefit used by one side creates a resource for its opponent. How strongly it affects particular strategies will depend on the full rules and play, rather than the announcement alone.
What comes in the box
The official product page lists 12 plastic siege-engine figures, three special Heroic Feat dice, 12 Despair tokens and two Fellowship/Palantír tokens. It also includes two Event cards, a Heroic Feat card, two reference sheets and the rules.
These are gameplay additions with supporting components, so the expansion offers more than extra miniatures for the existing battlefield. The product page also links an English rules download for players who want to examine the additions before ordering.
Price and regional availability
As checked on September 23, the Ares preorder shop lists the expansion with a promo card set at US$39.90, excluding tax. Shipping and the final total depend on the destination; the shop also warns that availability can vary by location.
December remains an expected retail window, not a guaranteed worldwide arrival date. Ares’ release calendar says dates can change and that releases outside the US normally follow four to eight weeks later, depending on distributor transit times. Players elsewhere should check their local retailer before planning a session around the launch.
