Spit card game rules and how to play
The Spit card game (also known as Speed in some regions) is a fast-paced two-player game built on reflexes, quick decisions, and constant movement.
The goal is simple: get rid of all your cards before your opponent by placing them onto shared center piles in ascending or descending order.
Unlike most classic card games, Spit has no turns. Both players play at the same time, which makes understanding the flow of the game just as important as reacting quickly.
Setup and preparations
Before the game begins, both players need to build their layout correctly. A clean setup is key, because the game moves very fast once it starts.
Game setup overview
| Element | Details |
|---|---|
| Players | 2 |
| Deck | Standard 52-card deck (no Jokers) |
| Objective | Be the first to get rid of all cards |
How to set up the game
- Shuffle the deck and deal 26 cards to each player
- Each player creates five piles in front of them:
- Pile 1: 1 card face up
- Pile 2: 2 cards (top card face up)
- Pile 3: 3 cards (top card face up)
- Pile 4: 4 cards (top card face up)
- Pile 5: 5 cards (top card face up)
- The remaining cards become your Spit pile (your personal draw stack)
- Leave space in the center for two shared piles where both players will play
Spit gameplay rules step by step
Spit is played in real time. There are no turns, and both players act simultaneously from start to finish.
Start the round
Both players say “Spit!” and flip one card from their Spit pile into the center. These become the two active piles.Play cards as fast as possible
You can place cards from your layout piles onto either center pile if the card is one rank higher or lower than the current card. Example: A 6 can take a 5 or a 7. Suits do not matter.Keep your layout active
When one of your five piles becomes empty, you must immediately replace it with a card from your Spit pile if possible. No moves available
If both players are stuck, you both say “Spit!” again and place a new card from your Spit pile onto each center pile to continue play.Ending the round
The round ends as soon as one player clears all their cards from both their layout and Spit pile.
The winner takes the smaller of the two center piles, while the other player takes the remaining pile. Both players then reshuffle and set up again.
Winning the game
The game continues over multiple rounds, with players reducing their total number of cards each time.
Eventually, one player runs out of cards completely. That player wins the game.
Tips to play Spit faster and smarter
Spit is a game of speed, but playing smart can give you a real advantage over time.
Stay focused on both center piles instead of locking onto one. Opportunities appear quickly, and missing them slows you down.
Use both hands when possible. This allows you to react faster and play multiple moves in quick succession.
Keep your piles organized and easy to reach. A messy layout can cost valuable seconds.
Train your pattern recognition. The faster you recognize which cards can be played, the more pressure you put on your opponent.
Most importantly, stay calm under pressure. Panic leads to mistakes, and in a fast game like Spit, mistakes are costly.
