The Royal Mint has launched a special 50p coin to mark the 90th anniversary of Monopoly, one of the most famous board games in the world.
The commemorative coin features several of the game’s most iconic elements, including the top hat, racing car, and Scottie dog tokens, alongside property cards. A special tilt-effect has also been added, revealing the Monopoly money symbol when viewed at an angle.
Monopoly was first published in 1935 and has confused persons with tricky Monopoly game rules ever since. It was created by the Parker Brothers and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. It has since been translated into over 30 languages and sold in more than 100 countries, making it one of the best-selling board games of all time.
A Cultural Icon
The game, originally based on Elizabeth Magie’s The Landlord’s Game from 1904, has grown into a global brand spanning video games, TV shows, merchandise, and even theme park attractions. Its design has also seen numerous editions and variations, including city-specific boards and themed spin-offs ranging from Star Wars to Super Mario.
The Royal Mint’s commemorative coin comes in both standard and collector’s versions, with limited editions available for purchase.
