How to Play Rummikub
Whether you’re new to the game or brushing up on the rules, this game guide will help you master Rummikub quickly.
The game is easy to learn, endlessly replayable, and fun for players of all ages.
Preparations
- Players: 2 to 4 players
- Components:
- 106 tiles (numbers 1–13 in four colors: black, blue, red, orange) + 2 jokers
- 4 tile racks (1 per player)
- A pouch/bag for drawing tiles
Setup:
- Mix all tiles face-down.
- Each player draws 14 tiles.
- Place tiles on your rack, keeping them hidden.
- The remaining tiles stay in the draw pile.
Gameplay
Rummikub is played in clockwise turns. The goal is to be the first to play all your tiles.
1. Initial Meld
- Your first move must place tiles totaling at least 30 points.
- Points are equal to tile values (e.g., a 10 = 10 points).
- Jokers can be used, but don’t count toward the 30 in most versions.
- If you can’t make an initial meld, draw one tile and pass your turn.
2. Playing Sets and Runs
After completing your initial meld, on future turns you may:
- Play new sets/runs from your rack.
- Manipulate existing tiles on the table to create new valid groups.
- Add tiles to sets/runs already on the table.
- If no move is possible, draw one tile instead.
3. Tile Groups Explained
- Set (Group): 3 or 4 tiles of the same number in different colors
Example: 7🔵 7🔴 7🟠 - Run: 3 or more consecutive numbers of the same color
Example: 4🟠 5🟠 6🟠 7🟠
Joker Rules
- Jokers can substitute for any tile in a set or run.
- Only one joker per set/run.
- Once a joker is on the table, it can be retrieved by replacing it with the exact tile it represents.
- Recovered jokers must be used immediately on the same turn.
Winning the Game
- The first player to play all tiles from their rack ends the round.
- Other players add up their remaining tile values as penalty points.
- The winner gains points equal to the sum of opponents’ remaining tiles.
- In a series of games, the player with the highest overall score wins.

FAQ
What are the official Rummikub rules?
Players take turns placing numbered tiles into sets or runs. The goal is to be the first to play all your tiles. Your first meld must equal at least 30 points, and jokers may be used with special conditions.
Can I move other players’ tiles on the table?
Yes! After your initial meld, you can manipulate existing tiles. Split runs, add to sets, or rearrange them, as long as all resulting groups are valid.
What if I can't make a move?
If no play is possible, you draw one tile from the pool and pass your turn.
How many tiles do you start with in Rummikub?
Each player starts with 14 tiles.
What are the Rummikub joker rules?
Jokers can substitute any tile but must be used carefully. If you replace a joker with the correct tile, you must immediately reuse the joker in a valid set/run on the same turn.
What are the Rummikub smiley face rules?
Some editions include novelty tiles like smiley faces, which act as wilds similar to jokers. These are optional and not part of official gameplay unless specified in the edition's rulebook.
