How to Play UNO
UNO is the ultimate family card game, known for fun, chaos, and the iconic moment of yelling “UNO!” at your friends.
Easy to learn, addictive to play, and full of variants, the official UNO rules are the foundation of both casual rounds and crazy house versions like UNO Flip or UNO No Mercy.
What’s in the Deck?
A standard UNO deck has 108 cards:
- Number cards (0–9) in four colors (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green)
- Action cards (per color): Skip, Reverse, Draw Two (+2)
- Wild cards: Wild, Wild Draw Four (+4)
UNO Setup
- Players: 2–10
- Each player starts with 7 cards
- The rest form the draw pile
- Flip over one card to start the discard pile
- The first player is the one to the left of the dealer
UNO Objective
Be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
Points are scored based on the cards left in opponents’ hands.
Turn Order & Gameplay
On your turn:
- Play one card that matches the color, number, or symbol of the discard pile’s top card.
- If you can’t play, draw one card:
- If it’s playable, you can play it immediately.
- If not, your turn ends.
Before playing your second-to-last card, you must say “UNO!”
- Forget, and if someone catches you → draw 2 cards.
UNO Card Rules – What Each Card Does
Card Type | Description |
---|---|
Number cards (0–9) | Match by color or number |
Skip | Next player loses their turn |
Reverse | Reverses direction of play |
Draw Two (+2) | Next player draws 2 cards + loses turn |
Wild | Play on any card; choose the new color |
Wild Draw Four (+4) | Same as Wild, but next player draws 4 cards + skips turn (special rule) |
Wild Draw Four Rule
- You may only play a +4 if you have no card matching the current color.
- If challenged, show your hand:
- If bluffing → you draw 4 cards.
- If legal → challenger draws 6 cards.
Winning UNO
When a player plays their last card → they win the round.
Scoring:
- Number cards → face value
- Skip/Reverse/+2 → 20 points each
- Wild/+4 → 50 points each
The game ends when:
- A player reaches 500 points, or
- You choose to play unlimited rounds.

UNO FAQ
What are the official UNO rules?
Play cards by matching color or number. Use wilds strategically. Say "UNO!" before your last card. First to 500 wins.
What happens if you don’t say UNO?
If another player catches you before your next turn, you draw 2 cards.
What’s the difference between UNO and UNO Flip?
UNO Flip has a two-sided deck. Flip cards switch the game from normal to a dark mode with more punishing effects.
Can you stack +2 or +4 cards?
Not officially, but many house rules allow stacking. Make sure everyone agrees before the game starts.
Can you end the game on a Wild Draw 4?
Yes, as long as it’s a legal play. But if someone challenges and you're wrong, you draw 4 and the game continues.
Is UNO No Mercy real?
It’s a custom fan variant and not official, but very popular online. Expect wild custom cards and brutal stacking.
