Jack Change It Rules
Jack Change It is a fast-paced card game for 2–6 players. Thanks to its simple core rules and high level of interaction, it is especially popular with children and families, but it also works well as a light party game for adults.
Much like Crazy Eights and the commercial game Uno, Jack Change It is all about matching cards and getting rid of your hand.

How to play Jack Change it
Jack Change It is played with a standard deck of cards where players take turns discarding cards that match the current upcard by suit or rank. Several cards act as trick cards, forcing other players to draw cards, skip turns, reverse play, or change suit.
The game continues clockwise (unless reversed) until one player runs out of cards and wins.
What makes it stand out is that multiple cards have special powers, which can dramatically change the flow of the game.
Preparations
| Setup | Details |
|---|---|
| Players | 2–6 |
| Deck | Standard 52-card deck (no jokers) |
| Cards per player | 7 |
| Goal | Be the first to discard all cards |
Setup step by step:
- Shuffle the deck
- Deal 7 cards to each player
- Place the remaining cards face down as the stock
- Turn the top card of the stock face up to start the discard pile
- The player to the dealer’s left begins
Gameplay
On your turn, you must either play a valid card or draw a card.
Playing a card
You may play one card from your hand if it matches the upcard by:
- Suit, or
- Rank
After you play a card, your turn ends and play passes to the next player.
If you have no legal play, you must:
- Draw one card from the stock
- Your turn then ends immediately
Trick cards and special effects
Some cards have special abilities that affect gameplay. These are called trick cards.
A trick card may not be played as your final card.
If a trick card is the only card left in your hand, you must draw instead.
Trick cards overview
| Card | Effect |
|---|---|
| 2 | Next player draws 2 cards (can be stacked) |
| 8 | Next player is skipped |
| Jack | Player chooses a new suit |
| Queen | Reverses direction (3+ players only) |
| A♥ | Next player draws 5 cards |
Detailed trick card rules
2s – Draw stacking
- When a 2 is played, the next player must draw 2 cards
- If that player plays another 2 instead:
- The penalty stacks
- The next player must draw 4 cards
- This continues until a player cannot respond with a 2
8s – Skip
- Playing an 8 skips the next player’s turn entirely
Jacks – Suit change
- When a jack is played, the player announces:
“Jack change it to…” and names one of the other three suits - The next player must play a card of that suit
Queens – Reverse (3+ players)
- Only active in games with three or more players
- Reverses the direction of play
Ace of Hearts (A♥)
- Forces the next player to draw 5 cards
- Can be played together with a 2 (the only time two cards may be played at once):
- Total draw becomes 7 cards
- The A♥ can be blocked by playing the 5♥
- If blocked, no cards are drawn
When the stock runs out
- Set the current upcard aside
- Shuffle the remaining discard pile
- Turn it face down to form a new stock
Here is how you win the game
You win Jack Change It by:
- Being the first player to discard all cards from your hand
Once a player has no cards left, the game ends immediately and that player is declared the winner.
