Codenames arrives on Netflix with a new Party mode

2nd October 2026, 10:34 CEST

Codenames: Party has arrived on Netflix, bringing the word-association board game to supported TVs and computer browsers. The September 29 launch gives game-night groups a new way to play, including a competitive mode where everyone scores individually instead of joining one of two teams.

What changes in the Netflix version?

The release was reported on September 29 by What’s on Netflix, with Backseat Gamer’s October 1 coverage also confirming the launch date. Netflix’s own support pages explain how this edition works.

In Party mode, players compete for their own score. Words or images are highlighted before the guessing starts, while other players provide the clues. Correct guesses earn points, and the highest score wins. That changes the social setup for groups accustomed to choosing sides and sticking with a team.

Classic Teams retains the familiar contest between two groups, with a spymaster giving clues and teammates identifying agents. There is also a cooperative Team vs Assassin option: players must uncover nine agents before a computer-controlled opponent reveals seven.

Case Studies lets the game take over the spymaster’s job. Players work out which words fit its clues, either alone or competitively. Netflix also lists image cards, a timer and avatar customisation among the adaptation’s options.

What do you need to play?

Each player joins using their own phone or tablet as a controller, according to Netflix’s player guidance. Player limits vary by mode; Case Studies supports one to ten, so a full group is not essential.

An active Netflix membership is required. Games are included without an additional game purchase, adverts or in-app purchases. However, TV and browser gaming remains a beta service, with restrictions by country and device.

The UK, US, Canada, Australia and Sweden are among the supported countries. Malta is not currently on Netflix’s list. On a compatible television, look for Games in the Netflix app; on a computer, Netflix directs players to Chrome or Edge. Check that access before planning an evening around it.

How does the original Codenames work?

Czech Games Edition’s physical game, designed by Vlaada Chvátil, asks teams to find their agents among a grid of word cards. A spymaster supplies a one-word clue and a number, trying to connect several targets without leading teammates to the assassin.

Our Codenames rules guide explains that tabletop foundation. It is useful preparation for Classic Teams, while the Netflix edition’s other modes give returning players different ways to organise the same clue-and-guess conversation.
