Wizards of the Coast has announced Magic Presents: Black History Month Celebration, a Commander event that WPN stores can host from 1–28 February 2027. Participants can receive a traditional foil Vivien Reid promo featuring art by Eli Minaya, while supplies last.

The 26 October announcement introduces themed gameplay alongside support for Black Girls Code. For players, the next step is to check which nearby stores plan to take part.

At a glance

  • The February event adds themed emblem abilities to Commander games at participating WPN stores.
  • The Vivien Reid participation promo is available only while supplies last.
  • Wizards plans to donate $1 per participant to Black Girls Code, up to $45,000 worldwide.

A different way to play Commander

Players will receive an emblem giving access to abilities associated with Black Planeswalkers, including Teferi Akosa and Kaya Cassir. That gameplay element is separate from the Vivien Reid card offered for participation. The announcement does not provide the complete emblem rules.

Commander's usual rules provide the starting point: a 100-card deck, including a commander, built around that commander's colour identity. Apart from basic lands, cards normally appear only once in a deck. Players begin with 40 life, and multiplayer games let them choose which opponents to attack.

That combination makes Commander a format in which a shared event rule can sit alongside very different personal decks. Players should check the event instructions before deciding what to bring.

Support for Black Girls Code

Wizards' announced contribution is tied to attendance, with the $45,000 cap applying to its worldwide donation. It is a planned contribution, rather than a sum already raised.

Black Girls Code works to widen access to technology education through workshops, coding resources and routes into technical careers. Its programmes include hands-on activities and free Code Along lessons, connecting creative interests with practical computing skills.

Check local arrangements before travelling

The February window gives stores room to choose their own event dates. Wizards directs players to its store locator for local contacts; the announcement does not establish that every WPN store will host.

Ask the intended venue about scheduling, registration, entry costs and promo availability. A month-long programme is useful for planning, but it does not reserve a seat or a card at a particular shop.
