SPIEL Essen sells out as organiser reports record attendance of 230,000

SPIEL Essen 2026 ended completely sold out, with the organiser reporting attendance of 230,000 across the four-day board game fair. The final ticket was sold on the afternoon of Sunday, 25 October, according to the event's official sellout announcement.

The result moves this year's attendance story beyond a pre-show forecast. The fair ran from 22–25 October 2026, and the reported total is 10,000 higher than 2025, when SPIEL also sold out. For publishers and players, it marks another full-capacity edition of a major meeting place for physical tabletop games.

At a glance

  • SPIEL Essen reports attendance of 230,000 after its last ticket sold on Sunday afternoon.
  • That is 10,000 above the organiser's 2025 total, an increase of about 4.5%.
  • The 2026 fair used all eight exhibition halls, covering 81,200 square metres.

A larger fair reaches its limit

The extra space was part of the plan before the doors opened. In its 3 September preview, SPIEL said the addition of Hall 8 would take the event to 81,200 square metres and allow a maximum attendance of 230,000.

Sunday's announcement therefore confirms that the expanded allocation was filled. It does not announce a further increase in capacity or establish that future editions will grow at the same rate.

For comparison, the organiser's 2025 closing report recorded 220,000 attendance, 77,500 square metres and four sold-out days. On those published figures, attendance rose by roughly 4.5% this year, while exhibition space increased by about 4.8%. Both comparisons use the organiser's own totals.

What players encountered

In its 26 October report, German public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk also reported the sellout and 230,000 attendance. It described almost 1,000 exhibitors from 53 countries presenting games that visitors could try, with nature themes, fantasy worlds, manga and anime among the prominent strands.

That mix is central to SPIEL's appeal: the event puts hands-on discovery alongside the business of publishing and selling games. Its pre-show programme also included talks, an Educators Day and activities beyond the exhibition halls under the Essen spielt! banner.

Attendance is one measure of the event

The closing figure is an organiser-reported attendance total; the short announcement does not explain how repeat visits are counted. It should therefore not be treated as a verified count of distinct individuals.

Nor does a sold-out fair, by itself, establish how much exhibitors sold or how individual releases performed. The confirmed development is narrower and concrete: the enlarged 2026 event exhausted its ticket allocation and reported a higher attendance total than last year.
