Chaos in the Old World is coming back, but its return will take players beyond Warhammer. Restoration Games has signed a multi-year agreement with Games Workshop to rework the cult favorite alongside Space Hulk: Death Angel and Warrior Knights.
According to BoardGameWire, the three games will share a new fantasy setting called Gravemarch, which Restoration is developing within Games Workshop’s Talisman Realm brand.
The first release will be Devastation in the Dread World, a new interpretation of Chaos in the Old World with original designer Eric Lang involved.
Familiar gameplay, a different world
First published in 2009, Chaos in the Old World built its reputation around competing factions with different abilities and objectives, fighting for influence across the Warhammer Fantasy setting.
Devastation in the Dread World will preserve the asymmetric factions and area-control gameplay, while changing both the setting and parts of the experience. One announced change is the introduction of scenarios in place of random events.
Lang is working with Restoration’s design team on the project. His involvement gives the revival a direct connection to the original, although the new title and setting make clear that this is more than a straightforward reprint.
Crowdfunding is planned for the first quarter of 2027, with a retail release to follow. That campaign window is not a confirmed delivery date.
Two more discontinued games join the lineup
The agreement also covers Space Hulk: Death Angel and Warrior Knights, with both projects provisionally scheduled for 2028.
Space Hulk: Death Angel will become Dungeons of Gravemarch: The Card Game. The original, designed by Corey Konieczka and released in 2010, was a cooperative card game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Its successor will move into the same fantasy world as Devastation in the Dread World.
Warrior Knights has a longer history, beginning with Games Workshop’s 1985 release before Fantasy Flight Games published a revised edition in 2006. Details of Restoration’s changes to that game have yet to be outlined.
All three titles were previously part of Fantasy Flight’s Games Workshop catalog. That licensing relationship ended with Fantasy Flight ceasing sales of the affected products in early 2017.
Talisman Realm connects the revivals
Gravemarch forms part of Games Workshop’s broader effort to build a connected setting around Talisman and other games from its back catalog.
The Talisman Realm initiative has also named Fury of Dracula, Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb and Chainsaw Warrior among the titles involved. Restoration’s three projects are therefore part of a wider plan to give older games new identities within a shared fantasy universe.
For Chaos in the Old World and Death Angel, the change is particularly significant: their new versions will leave behind their original Warhammer settings.
Restoration adds another major revival to its catalog
Restoration Games has made updating discontinued titles its specialty. Its previous projects include Return to Dark Tower and Thunder Road: Vendetta, while The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit reworks the out-of-print Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit under a different license.
The Games Workshop agreement could eventually lead to further releases set in Gravemarch or elsewhere in Talisman Realm, but no additional projects have been confirmed.
For now, Devastation in the Dread World leads the schedule. Its crowdfunding reveal should provide a closer look at how much of Chaos in the Old World remains intact and how its new scenarios reshape the game.
